Workout Motivation

August 3, 2017

For the past year or so, I struggled with working out consistently. I went through phases where I would work out every day for 3 weeks and then not work out for 2 months. Needless to say, it wasn’t good. Since starting my job in January, I’ve joined a gym and really gotten into the swing of things working out wise! For the most part, I’m in a routine of working out 3-4 days a week and I love it. I still struggle with getting to the gym on occasion (I am NOT a fitness guru by any means, haha), so I thought I would share some of my tips on how I stay motivated.

Here’s how I stay motivated to work out:
1. Find a routine that works for you

If you’re just getting into working out, don’t push yourself to go to the gym 6x a week. It’s just not going to happen. Start small and try 2x a week, then 3x and go up from there. Once you get into a routine, don’t beat yourself up if you have to miss a day or two here and there. Forcing yourself to go every day when you know it’s not for you won’t help you stay motivated! Finding a routine that works for you will help make you actually want to go to the gym.

2. Mix up your routine

If you do the same thing every time you work out, it pretty much becomes torture. This ultimately means you’ll start dreading going to the gym even more. Avoid this by always keeping your workouts fresh and new! If you’ve ran on the treadmill twice this week, do the elliptical next time, or try a pilates class. That way you’ll feel more inspired to try something new instead of doing crunches for the millionth time!

3. Treat yourself

If I’m like reeeeally dreading going to the gym, sometimes for a little extra motivation I’ll bribe myself with a reward. It doesn’t have to be anything big! For me I’ll tell myself if I go to the gym I can stop by the mall afterwards or get froyo later. It helps on those rough days, I swear!

4. Know what time works for you

Figure out when your ideal workout time is! If you’re a morning person, great. If not, that’s cool too. I’ve always wanted to be a hop out of bed and hit the gym person, but  I learned that it just doesn’t work for me. If I have to I’ll work out in the morning, but 99% of the time I work out in the evening after work. I just feel better working out later in the day! So, find your optimal workout time and try and stick with it.

5. Get new workout clothes

Honestly, nothing makes me more motivated to work out then getting new workout clothes. It sounds silly but it’s the truth! Whether it’s a new sports bra or some super slimming leggings, if I have new workout gear you bet I’m headed to the gym the next chance I get. It’s so simple but a guaranteed motivator!

How do you stay motivated to work out? I’d love to hear your tips!
