Mother’s Day Gift Ideas She’ll Actually Love

May 2, 2017

My mom is the hardest person to buy anything for, because she genuinely doesn’t want/need anything. Seriously. Not the kind of mom who says oh I don’t need anything but then she secretly wants stuff. Like my mom would be genuinely happy if I didn’t get her anything! Weird, I know, but that’s just how she is. It’s especially hard for me, because gift-giving is one of my favorite things to do!! But she just doesn’t want more things. All the typical mother’s day gift ideas are out. Candles? Nope. Perfume? Doesn’t wear it.

Since it’s super hard for me to not get her anything, I have to get a little crafty and think outside the box. These are some ideas for gifts that aren’t “things” and that she will actually love, I swear. Plus, many of them are activities that you can do together, which in my opinion is the best kind of gift!

Make her a handmade card

Who doesn’t love a good handmade card?! I always make my friends and family handmade cards for birthdays and special occasions. I love doing it, and everyone loves them, especially my parents! It’s fun to include photos (new and old!), quotes, and stories. Even if you’re not the craftiest person, your mom will love the thought and sentiment behind it!

Cook dinner for her

One thing my mom always says she wants is for someone to cook her dinner. It’s so simple, but so thoughtful and something any mom would love! Pour her a glass of wine while you and your family whip up a special meal for her at home.

Instead of flowers, get her a plant for her garden

Of course cut flowers are beautiful, but they only last so long. Mix it up and get her a plant for her garden instead! I know nothing about gardening, but I knew my mom loves geraniums and has them all around the house. On a whim I bought her a bright pink geranium plant for Mother’s Day last year, not thinking too much of it. Turned out she LOVED it and was one of her favorite presents to date! It’s sitting on the patio still and has grown so much, which is fun to see.

Take her to her favorite restaurant

This isn’t super outside the box, but it’s not just another #1 mom mug or tea towel. And I mean, you really can’t go wrong by making a reservation at her favorite restaurant. To make it extra fun, make it a surprise! Tip: to avoid crowds, make the reservation for the day before. No crazy wait time, lines, or hassle! On the actual day, do something more low key like breakfast at home or going for a hike.

Frame a photo of the two of you

Again, this option seems so simple but it’s got so much sentimental value! Getting photos printed these days is kind of rare as it is (they just tend to get lost in the iPhone abyss), so surprise her with a recent photo of the two of you in a nice frame. She will love it, I promise!

Be her personal shopper for the day

Sometimes when I go shopping with my mom it turns into more about me than her (sorry, mom!). So, plan a trip where you can be her personal shopper and it’s alllll about her! Style her, bring her options, run and get sizes if she needs them, and make sure she feels pampered and taken care of. Make sure to take her to lunch or coffee while you’re shopping, too!

Get her a yoga or pilates classes package

Everyone could use a little more wellness in their lives, especially moms who do so much! Getting your mom a yoga or pilates class package is great because it’s something you can both do together. Maybe get a different style of class that she’s never taken before, or at a studio in a fun part of town. That way you can try something new together, too!

Do you have any other non-traditional gift ideas for mom? Let me know!!
