Desert Camping Weekend

January 17, 2018

If you caught my Instagram stories on Monday, you might have seen some snippets from my desert camping trip last weekend. I ended up taking a bunch of photos, so I thought I would make a quick little post!

For the past few years, my family has gone camping in Anza-Borrego desert on MLK weekend, and this is the first time I’ve been able to go with them. I was slightly skeptical at first at the thought of desert camping (I’m definitely more of a mountains person), but it totally proved me wrong. The desert was absolutely beautiful.

Seriously, we were in awe the entire time. I had been to Borrego before, but I haven’t been back since high school and I guess I never appreciated its beauty. Man oh man was it ever beautiful. Dave and I were in awe of the gorgeous desert mountains the entire time!

We drove out on Saturday morning and met my family at the campgrounds where they had already set up camp. We pitched our tent and got everything set up (by we I mean Dave) and headed out for a hike.

The first hike we did was called Palm Canyon. I’ve done my fair share of hiking across San Diego County, and I can’t believe I had never done this hike! It was seriously breathtaking. You hike through the canyon in the wash area all the way up to this incredible desert oasis with water and palm trees. It was surreal and SO pretty!

Anza Borrego is known for their bighorn sheep, and we saw a bunch of them. It was so cool!

We woke up to catch the sunrise (well, my cousin woke up Dave and I, haha) and it was so worth it. It was AMAZING! I mean. Have you ever seen anything so gorgeous?! This was the view from our tent!

We headed out on another hike Sunday morning called Cougar Canyon. It’s about a 45 minute drive on a windy, dirt road, so it gave Dave the chance to test out his new Subaru! He had so much fun doing some off-roading. Even I had fun off-roading (I kind of secretly love it even though it freaks me out sometimes haha)!

This hike was also beautiful and led to an incredible canyon filled with waterfalls. It’s just so crazy that this is in the middle of the desert! In the photos above I am wearing this anorak that is currently on sale. It’s the perfect lightweight jacket for hiking!

I already can’t wait for our next camping trip!
