How To Deal With Being Too Busy

August 24, 2017

I feel like these days it’s a competition to see who can be the busiest. Do you feel it too? Everyone is constantly talking about how busy they are and how much they having going on in their lives. It’s almost to the point where it’s a competition, like whoever is busiest wins. Between full time jobs, side hustles, family, significant others, and friends, it’s a miracle anyone finds time to sleep (well, I guess some people just don’t)!

I have to admit that I’m guilty of being a bit “too busy” as of late. I’ve got a lot on my plate right now with my full time job and a couple of side hustles. It’s taken me a while to get used to it, but I’m learning that it is possible to be super busy and still stay sane. Although I could cut back a bit, I’m young and I feel like now is the time to have a few irons in the fire, you know? I’d rather have more on my plate now than further on down the line. So, if any of you guys are struggling with busy schedules and a lot on your plate, I thought I would share a few of my tips on how to deal with being busy!

1. Focus on one task at a time

When you have a million things on your plate, it can be easy to want to get everything done at once. If you try to do multiple tasks at the same time, you typically end up being overwhelmed and probably won’t finish anything. Try and pick one task and focus all your time and energy on it, and finish it (if you can). Then, move on and focus on the next thing. Working like this helps you to slow down and put 100% of your efforts into everything you’re doing.

2. Learn to say no

At some point, you have to learn to say no. You have to realize that you aren’t a superhuman and you simply cannot do everything. Even though it might be hard, you need to realize your limits and stick to them, otherwise you’ll spread yourself too thin and never get anything done. Alternatively, if you’ve got a lot on your plate, you might have to say no to fun things like happy hour every now and then (like I did tonight so I could make sure I finished everything I needed to, even though a beer sounded reallll good). As much as it sucks, you have to be okay with making sacrifices to get stuff done.

3. Make time for things you love

No matter how crazy busy you are, remember that you should prioritize yourself and your well being above anything else. Even if it’s for a few minute snippets here and there, take time to do things you love. Whether you put everything away for an hour to catch up on your favorite show or actually go to happy hour, make sure you are making time for yourself. If your life becomes 100% work, you’ll end up burned out and frazzled. I’ve been there, and it’s not pretty!

4. Don’t compare yourself

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” I think I struggle with this most of all. We all know that comparing ourselves to other people is pretty much the worst thing to do. There’s always going to be someone more successful, with better clothes, who seems like they have it all together…you just can’t let it get to you. Nothing is as it seems on social media, and even though we know this, it’s hard to keep in mind when you’re scrolling through someone’s perfect feed. Putting yourself down by comparing your life with others is only going to hold you back. It’s the opposite of what you need to do when you have a ton on your plate!

5. Exercise

It sounds counterintuitive to do something other than get all the things done when you’re super busy, but I’ve learned that working out is totally necessary. Not only does working out make you feel better in general, it gives you an energy boost that will make you feel even more productive. Every time I work out, I feel like I get so much more done!

Just remember, you can do anything, but not everything.
